Initial-consonant search

Type just ㄱㅁㅇㅎ and it finds "국민은행". A search engine tuned for Korean.

USB and NAS too

Places the MFT cannot reach — exFAT USB sticks and SD cards, network drives, NAS — are scanned separately. A 660,000-file USB stick takes 0.5 seconds. It can be slow, so it is off by default.

Find duplicates

Use dupe: to find files with the same name, and dupe:content to find files with identical contents. Sizes are already in the index, so the disk is not scanned again.

Why it is fast

It does not lean on a cache

Everything remembers a search term once you have typed it. So if you type the same thing again it answers in about 1 ms. But a string it has not seen before takes 82.8 ms. Searching is mostly typing something you have not typed before.

Korean search

The gap is widest in Korean

A Korean syllable is built from a consonant and a vowel, so how characters are handled decides the result. FastFind treats jamo and initials separately.

See it for yourself

Memory is quicker to see than to describe. Check it with both programs running.

  1. Right-click the Start buttonTask Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc does not work on some PCs)
  2. The Processes tab — this is what opens first — if you get a small window showing only a few apps, click More details at the bottom to switch to the full view
  3. Click the Memory column heading to sort largest first — if it sorts smallest first (▲), click once more. Both are on the heavy side, so they rise to the top together
  4. Find Everything near the top and FastFind below it, and compare

Note — Everything runs as two processes. If they are grouped into one row, that figure is the total (473.5 MB); if they appear separately, you must add the two rows (471.3 + 2.2). Look at only one and it appears to be 2.2 MB. FastFind is a single row.

To match the column exactly, look at Memory (active private working set) on the Details tab. It is the same figure as Memory on the Processes tab.
